Adjust Your Thermostat Settings

Increase your thermostat by 5 to 8 degrees, depending on your comfort level, so your air conditioning runs less. When your system runs less often, you lower your utility bills and decrease wear and tear on your HVAC system, thereby reducing the chances of needing residential AC repair over the life of your air conditioner.

Use a Programmable Thermostat

The easiest way to adjust your thermostat settings is to use a programmable thermostat. Program temperatures to be higher when no one is in the house or when you’re sleeping at night when outdoor temperatures are cooler.

Keep Sunlight Out

Take advantage of blinds and shades on your windows to keep direct sunlight from filtering into your home. Direct sunlight heats up your house and makes your air conditioning run more often.

Maintain Your Outdoor Condenser

Your outdoor condenser uses a large fan to disperse heat away from your refrigerant lines. To ensure proper airflow and heat dispersion, keep a clear area around your outdoor condenser of at least 2 feet.

Trim back any tree branches, bushes, or plants, and remove any leaves, debris, or other obstructions. Maintain all sides of the condenser by keeping them as clean and clear as much as possible. Residential AC repair specialists will remove any debris that may have gotten inside the unit when they are performing maintenance or repair for an outdoor condenser.

Change the Air Filter Regularly

Many air filters require you to replace them every one to three months, depending on the material or type of air filtration you have. Reduce the need for residential AC repair and maintain an efficient air conditioner by following the manufacturer’s instructions for replacing air filters.

Open Every Register

It sounds counter-intuitive, but you should keep every register open. Open and closing registers tampers with the cooling load of your system and may cause inefficiency or damage.

Dust and Clean Weekly

Your ductwork may collect dust over time. Aside from a quality air filter, regularly dusting and cleaning your home every week reduces the amount of dust in your ducts and keeps residential AC repair at bay.

Use Room Fans

Room fans offer an excellent way to increase air movement in a particular part of your home. Fans also use less electricity than your HVAC system while lowering wear and tear on your air conditioner. Only turn on fans when someone is in the room.
