Air Authority Answers: Why is My AC Fan Not Spinning?

Uh-oh. You’ve tried turning your air conditioner on, and nothing.

If your AC fan isn’t spinning, you know you won’t have cool air in your home. This is a frustrating problem, especially as summer blazes on.

MY AC Fan Is Not Spinning

Even if everything else appears to be working, the fan could be the culprit if your AC isn’t working correctly.

When your AC isn’t working, first, you must determine the issue. When your AC fan is broken, you might notice a strange noise, such as a rattling or no noise at all.

Most homes have two AC fans, one on the outside of your home and one inside. Start by checking these first. It may be broken if you don’t hear the typical whirring noise from the outside of the fan. Look and see if the fan is spinning.

Other signs are AC fan isn’t spinning and a broken air conditioning unit in general include:

  • no cold air blowing from your vents
  • sharply-rising utility bills
  • frequent and unexpected shut-downs

Reasons Your AC Fan Isn’t Working

If all signs point to a broken AC fan, several issues could have contributed to it.

  1. Electricity Problems:

The risk of overheating your unit rises when you’re constantly running your AC in this warm weather. If your system is overheated, it could have tripped the breaker.

You can try flipping your circuit breaker box. If that fails to resolve the problem, or if it continues happening, it’s time to call in an electrician.

  1. Broken Capacitor

Your AC capacitor is found in the outdoor air conditioning unit. It is responsible for jolting the power needed to power the AC. Air conditioners require a lot of energy to run, so replacing this part if it is broken or damaged is necessary!

  1. Your Air Filters Need to be Replaced

If it’s been a while since your air filter has been replaced, it could be the culprit in your AC fan no longer turning. Excess debris in old filters clogs the flow of air throughout the unit.
